Blog 90- Lovely Yorkes

Not much to do with wine today- but I packed up the hubby and kids on Friday after work and headed to our favourite getaway spot- Marion Bay on the very bottom of the Yorke Peninsula ‘foot’. For those who dont know South Australia- McLaren Vale is on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and next peninsula over (the one that looks like a foot), is Yorke Peninsula. If we could see across the St.Vincent Gulf from Marion Bay, we would look right into the windows of The Star of Greece at Pt Willunga!

Yorkes is a favourite holiday destination for loads of South Aussies. Pristine beaches, loads of brilliant fishing, Innes National Park, and a surfing mecca. It is around a 3 hr drive from Adelaide to the bottom of the foot, so awesome for weekend getaways.

Dan & I have a holiday house down in Marion Bay, that we love to escape to with the family whenever we can. Dan is a very keen surfer, and the surf around the foot of Yorkes rarely disappoints.

Don & Margie are currently building on the marina in Port Vincent- still very good fishing, but without the open ocean swells of the Southern Yorke Peninsula. Don gets sea sick.

I dont really fish or surf, so amuse myself with walks along the beach with the kids, cooking & hiking through the Innes National Park. Not to be missed is Westcape Beach- stunning white beach that goes for ever, Dolphin Beach- great for swimming with the kids. Chinamans, Ponde, Ethel Wreck are the main surf spots within the park. Wildlife abounds- specially Emus & Roos. Marion & Stenhouse Bay’s are known for the best squid fishing in the state- right off the jetty.

Check out our Blue Horizon beach house website if you want a getaway to this part of the world. We rent out our place when we have to concentrate on all things grape (i.e. all Summer to Easter!).
